Rivet Radio partners with Scripps to create audio content for Amazon’s Alexa speakers

CHICAGO, Oct. 4, 2017 — Television news stations are turning to Rivet Radio to reach listeners at home through Amazon’s line of Echo smart speakers. Rivet Radio, a forerunner in the creation, management and distribution of smart audio, recently completed a successful one-market pilot with The E.W. Scripps Company, creating and delivering audio news stories to reach into listeners’ homes through smart speakers.

Upon completion of the successful pilot with WFTS in Tampa, Scripps partnered again with Rivet to expand their Alexa skill program with 8 additional TV markets, going live August: WXYZ/Detroit, KNXV/Phoenix, WEWS/Cleveland, KMGH/Denver, KGTV/San Diego, WTVF/Nashville, WPTV/West Palm Beach and KTNV/Las Vegas. Scripps also provides flash briefings from WCPO/Cincinnati and TMJ4/Milwaukee on the Alexa platform.

Listeners in these markets access the flash briefings by enabling the skill on their Echo and then saying “Alexa, what’s in the news?” Alexa will take it from there.

“Amazon Echo devices are how Rivet envisioned consumers accessing news and information back at our initial launch. People now can talk to their ‘radios,’ and their radios talk back — delivering just the stories that listeners want,” said Rivet Radio CEO, John MacLeod.

“The explosion of the home speaker market has the potential to change the way our audiences consume news,” said Rob McCracken, director of digital solutions for Scripps. “We are always looking for ways to connect with our audiences in places they are looking for news and information, and partnering with Rivet was an effective way to help our stations get their content onto the Alexa platform.”

The new custom Alexa skills offering from Rivet is just the latest in a long list of innovations to meet customers’ unique “smart audio” needs. Its proprietary content management system powers delivery of audio news to smartphone and website users, idle on-hold call participants and retail sound systems.
